Okay, let’s get into the Ten questions for Maaya Mattoo!
𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗯𝘆?
I'm from New Delhi, India. Other than making music, you can find me reading, watching interviews of my favourite musicians. Most of the time, my dog keeps me company.
𝟮. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰/𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
I've been singing for as long as I can remember. It all started with taking Indian Classical Vocal training from my Grandma at the age of three. Soon enough, I picked up the keys, guitar and eventually found myself leaning towards Western Vocals. I like singing both Indian and Western styles of singing however, my forte (at least currently) is Western and specifically R&B, Neo-Soul bordering on Pop.
𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀?
Definitely the talent I see around me. I cannot, for the life of me, name a single person because I am inspired by my mentors and teachers as the years have gone by as well as musicians I've grown up listening to. Thanks to my family for having a fantastic taste in music!
𝟰. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰?
I started writing my own songs when I was about 17 but didn't bother doing much about them until I turned 20, which is when I released my debut single 'Some Days'.
𝟱. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆?
Hopefully, I'll be able to change how R&B is seen nowadays. Old-school R&B is becoming less common and the contemporary, modern, more electronic feel is finding a home in the current audience. Though in India, Indian Classical and Bollywood clearly comprise the hegemony, I hope I'm able to change the way people see music here. Bringing together R&B and Indian Classical together some day sounds extremely fun to me!
𝟲. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲?
Just take me to New Orleans some day. Forget Wembley, forget anything else - New Orleans is where the music is at! But that doesn't mean I don't wish to perform at Madison Square Garden or the Wembley Stadium and all the other renowned locations, of course.
𝟳. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴?
This is genuinely a tough one! I can listen to Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits anytime, anywhere. Mark Knopfler could step on me and I wouldn't complain.
𝟴. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?
On stage, right after a performance actually! Tripped over the mic's lead and fractured my ankle. The worst part was my entire school's crowd was watching. By entire I mean ENITRE. Yep, everybody laughed. Now I laugh, too.
𝟵. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?
Probably being awarded the Excellence in Music Principal's Award (the same year I fractured my ankle and was laughed at by the entire school). Though I've accomplished greater things now, this incident is always going to be something I hold close.
𝟭𝟬. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲?
With Erykah Badu and/or Stevie Wonder - mad genius, both of them!
That concludes today’s Ten Questions with Maaya Mattoo.
