𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 - this week: Take the World with Me - Rod Fritz

Welcome all to 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly - an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 playlists.

Charles discards the roof from his place of solitary confinement and allows the sunlight to bleach his interior.

Am I right in saying we are all sick to death of being low and miserable? Am I right in saying none of us can wait for the balmy summer to grace us with its presence? Sometimes life just gets a little bit heavy. A little bit frozen in gloom. Lately there has been quite a bit of this for most of us. Well how about we alter our frame of mind and see the sunnier side of life? I have decided that now is the time to get ‘well perked’. No point in moping. No point in worrying about the future. The present is what we have right now. So why not make something of it? I’m going to need a bit of help here though. It’s time for us all to come together (at least in mind and spirit, for the time being), on your feet, beam those smiles - can I get a whoop-whoop?? Would you please welcome the one and only Rod Fritz to the stage, with his brand new single, Take the World with Me! Sit back, relax, and let Rod cradle you in his arms, with warmth and his trademark endearing smile.

What power there is in positivity. In hope. In united joy. The Australian singer certainly realises this. He knows how to make people feel good. God Fritz, soon to be Dad Fritz, or most commonly called Rod Fritz, the man exudes positivity without trying. Although originally from the land down under, the performing artist has toured all over America and Europe and currently resides in Germany. Despite the pandemic being somewhat detrimental and frankly catastrophic to a live performer, he hasn’t let it deter him too much. The Fred Astaire line springs to mind: “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again”. Rod is the man of good vibes - he is made up entirely of positively charged wossnames. His new song embodies everything that he stands for, and is written for his son yet to be born - Rod Jr. is in the making.

Take the World with Me manages something quite rare as it will undoubtedly appeal to a huge and wide audience. There have been songs written in this vein in the past, but they tend to have a whimsical, drifting quality that although nice, might soon be forgotten. Rod balances whimsy, simplicity, song form and the art of catchiness. One can tell he is not new to this. A seasoned writer and true professional. In my opinion, many of the best pop songs come across as simple or easy. The difficulty comes when attempting to make it SOUND easy but to continue to hold the audience’s attention. Even by the second chorus, you will find yourself singing along - it is a great hook.

The song also has so much potential in terms of radio, live performance, film and tv, and even adverts! Rod’s relentless upbeat charm is what powers us through to the final note. There is something so satisfying about his voice. It is rounded and deep, but also warm on the top end. A simple, sparse production is not what I am used to doing in my songs, but Rod makes me realise the advantages in holding back. Less is more etc. Take the World with Me consists of just acoustic guitar, bass, vocals, kick, finger clicks, tambourine, and finally glockenspiel. Nothing more, as far as I can tell. The glue and sheen of the song comes with impeccable mixing.

No more Mr. Nice Guy? I think we very much want more Mr. Nice Guy! Despite our huge group of artists on the New Artist Spotlight playlists, I believe few are full-time musicians, artists, producers or performers. This of course is the goal for most of us in the long run, but it is hard. Rod Fritz has however managed to achieve this, in making a living from performing as an artist for many years. Because of this, the pandemic has maybe affected him more than most other artists. But as I said before, he has seen it as an opportunity to spread the word online and focus more on new songs and interaction with the general public. Who knows, it could even have been a most fortunate circumstance!

Onward and upward!
