𝟭. Where are you from and what is your hobby?
I am from Newmarket. A town 30 minutes north of Toronto. My hobbies are writing music and the outdoors.
Writing music has become almost more of an obsession than a hobby but I love it.
𝟮. How did your get into music?
I began making music when I was about 6 or 7. I remember going to my grandparents house and watching my Great Uncle wow everyone on the piano. When we would go visit after that I would quietly sit in the room and try and play notes. Every week we went there. Then at home I used my Dad’s tape recorder in the basement and sang songs. Grease, Elvis, Queen you name it. I probably still have it I’m my collection. Then as I started learning guitar and piano I just always recorded it. Right up to today.
𝟯. Who are your biggest influences?
Well, like a lot of artists The Beatles opened my eyes to songwriting. Before it was just strumming or hammering on a piano. Then it became about the melodies. Neil Young was also a big influence. He was a very important Canadian who did things his way and made it work. He was also a very melodic writer.
Elo, Supertramp, Eagles, Black Sabbath, the list goes on. Then things changed in the ‘80’s. The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order. It was the first time I remember the genre Alternative music being used.
4. What are your goals in the music industry?
Well, it would probably be a songwriter. That is what I love to do. I barely get into one song and I’m into the next. I am doing what I can to establish a sound and put music out as J.H.M but if I could write music for others as well and have success with that it would be perfect. Perhaps if I continue to release material then who knows what may happen. I am content and happy and would never want to change what I have in life. But if it happens that someone had interest in my songs then that would be nice.
5. If you could choose a location to perform at, what would it be?
It sounds incredibly strange. But I have been to Liverpool a few times with my wife who was born there. Rich musical history and all. But I remember one time being there and there was sort of an independent festival around what is now Liverpool 1. I can’t remember the details just that all of these independent artists would just walk on stage and were so impressive. I imagine it would be great to get up and perform a song and have the crowd be into it.
6. What is your all-time favorite song?
A Day In The Life
7. Most embarrassing moment?
I don’t know…. I think I just remember being a kid and feeling awkward or embarrassed in situations and it really affects you when you're young. I somehow remember those more than what happens today.
8. Proudest accomplishment?
That would be my family. Everything else is second. Music wise…..just how I do feel when I write a song. It is an outlet that helps the soul. A release of emotion and thought. A way of letting go of pain and celebrating life.
9. What is something about you that might surprise someone who knows you the best?
Well, I don't know if there is anything that would surprise someone but I have to sing in my phone. any little riff, words, melodies. I can't get things done in my life if the tune is in my head. I have to get it out. Driving a car, middle of the night. I have to pull over or wake up and go downstairs and sing it in my phone. and hopefully I can recognize it later.
𝟭𝟬. What is your dream collaboration?
Tough one….but probably Paul McCartney. The incredible songs he has written over the years. To sit and learn and write with him would be unbelievable. The second would be Eddie Vedder. I just have so many songs of mine I would like him to sing. He has just an incredible voice.
