NAS 10 Questions with Pamara

This time on The NAS 10 Questions, we get to know Pamara, a Colombian singer-songwriter with influences such as Alicia Keys, Shakira and Avicii with goals of becoming a nationally reknowned artist.

The track "Mi Historia" is featured on NAS Playlists.

1. Tell us a little about where you are from and what you are currently doing.

I’m from Colombia, the land of Shakira, Karol G, Maluma, Juanes, J Balvin haha.

Currently, I have a job at a company that teaches artists in Latin America how to be independent, so they don’t have to rely on others to start promoting their music, performing on stages, and generating income. Essentially, it turns ordinary artists into independent artists with all the knowledge needed to achieve their dreams; it’s up to the artist to follow the teachings or not. I was once a student of these mentors and now work with them because they saw that I was a very disciplined woman.

In my free time, that is, after 6 pm and on weekends, I focus on my independent music project "PAMARA," sending emails to venues, booking, looking for media for interviews, recordings, creating more music, managing social media—basically, everything that needs to be done haha. I’m also taking piano lessons, so I split my time between practicing that and singing. Do I have a social life? Nope, really, on some Sundays, I’m so exhausted that I just want to watch documentaries and eat popcorn all day at home.

2. What inspired you to start playing and making music?

I've always loved music since I was a child, I remember telling my dad I wanted to be a singer when I grew up.

I’ve always felt that inner fire in my heart that motivates me to persist in music. Furthermore, I once suffered from anxiety, and at that time, I was doing something completely unrelated to music. After that, I understood that life is one, and I should do what makes me happy, so I returned to music and kept pushing forward.

Furthermore, I used to sing in churches and I grew up listening to Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Adele, and Shakira (of course, I am Colombian), I remember trying to imitate them and having my dolls as my public, LMAO

It is something that I love with all my heart, to be honest.

𝟯. Who are your biggest musical influences? How would you describe your style or genre?

I have plenty, but currently, I want to say Alicia Keys and Avicii. I know Avicii is not here anymore, but his song "Wake Me Up" has marked my entire life since then, his song described my thoughts and still.

And I love Alicia Keys, she looks so like a queen singing and playing her piano on the concert, her presence, impacts me & inspire me lol

4. What are your goals in the music industry or as an artist?

Like every artist, I would like to live making music, I see myself doing concerts and singing everywhere, sharing my thoughts using music to express them, motivating people to be themselves when they listen to my songs and just being an artist 100% of my time.

I would also like to be a well-known artist in my country and beyond, sharing a message of empowerment and the belief that we can achieve our dreams.

5. Tell us about your creative process when you make new music.

Basically, what I do is have a musical reference, in this case, a song that’s been stuck in my head for days. I really enjoy writing down my thoughts on any topic, whether it’s about criticisms I’ve received, a boring date I had, some political injustice, or something I’m against in society (which are many things). I’m still trying to fit into this world. So, I write a long text about it—random thoughts or sometimes a piece to read—and then I reach out to my producer to help me organize all those writings and start shaping them into a song. Usually, I have someone who helps me with the song creation, although my goal is to compose songs all by myself.

6. What is your all-time favorite song by another artist and why?

Wake Me Up by Avicii has been my favorite song since I was 13. The first time I heard it, I was a teenager, and I started crying because that song was describing with extreme accuracy everything that was going through my head at that moment. Even now, it's still my favorite. When I listen to it, it makes me emotional, and every time I sing it, I get goosebumps. In the LIVE SESSION I recorded, I sang it, and it was truly beautiful.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

The best advice I ever received was when someone told me, 'Stop waiting for someone to come and save your career. Instead, prepare yourself, learn what you need to learn, and take ownership of your own dreams. It's your life, your peace of mind, and it's not wise to depend on anyone else.

"Stop waiting for someone to come and save your career. Instead, prepare yourself, learn what you need to learn, and take ownership of your own dreams."

8. Proudest accomplishment?

Reaching nearly 15k streams of my latest single 'MI HISTORIA' on Spotify and 13k views of the same single on YouTube, and I didn't even make an official video, it was more of a lyric video. That really excited me, because I am starting, it is my second release.

9. Just for fun! What's been your most embarrassing moment so far?

My most embarrassing moment… well, it’s not music-related, although I’ve had quite a few. When I started, I would often crack while singing and go off-key quite a bit. But the most embarrassing moment in my life happened a few years ago, when I was in my 20s. I invited a man 10 years older than me to a mall just to tell him that I knew he liked me, LMAO. He looked at me and said, 'Did you really call me here for that? Actually, no, I'm just being polite.' Haha! That’s when I realized I needed to learn some humility. It’s something that keeps me grounded. Even now, I still feel embarrassed when I talk about it, but it's good to get it out. Haha!

𝟭0. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

I would say that the hardest moment in my career was at the beginning. As a woman, I felt that the men who offered to help me were trying to take advantage. They would ask for photos, you know, photos that were unnecessary to send, or they would ask me to spend a night with them, or even crazier, to be the girlfriend of a fool for a day (sorry for calling him a "fool," but it's the only thing that comes to mind when I think of that person). However, I've always had my values very clear, and I didn't agree to those kinds of requests.

Currently, I feel like I’m at the highest point of my career because I haven’t been here before, haha. I’m having fun, enjoying the process, learning a lot, building my community, supporting other independent artists who support me, creating my team, breaking taboos when it comes to making my music, and I feel a lot of respect from the people around me now, as they are very talented and professional. I love working with such people.

I absolutely loved reading about your inspirations, creative process, and the journey behind your music! It’s inspiring to see how you turn everyday experiences, whether it’s a boring date or societal issues, into beautiful songs. Your favourite song, ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii, resonates with me so much. I often perform my cover of it when I play gigs—it’s a great song and a real crowd-pleaser; it always wakes the audience up 🙂 🙌. It’s amazing how music can capture our emotions so perfectly. The best advice you’ve received about taking ownership of your dreams is golden and something we all need to hear. Keep shining and making incredible music. Your story and your beautiful…
