1. Tell us a little about where you are from.

Hello, I'm Daniel, or Teddy if you prefer . I live on the north east coast of the UK in a small seaside town, trapped between a large river. Most of my time is spent looking at clouds, waiting for a day with a blue sky, but at least I have music. I'm currently working on my first album. I've always released song by song but wanted to do something a little different this time. Working on a little rock/metal opera has been the most fun I've had in some time. Heavy riffs, weird chords and even a ballad or two in the works. Recording music has become my main thing.

In 2011, I tripped at work and shattered by elbow into many parts. Being told by the surgeon that I may never play music again was depressing, let alone the disclaimer i had to sign regarding it. They had no idea how bad the nerve damage would be so I could have lost my arm. The surgeon did however say he would make the joint bend differently so if it was successful there would be a chance I could still play music. Lucky for me, when I woke up the first thing I asked was if I still had both my arms: part one complete.

Next step was getting back into music. Three months later, although painful, I played my first chord after the accident. After some time being in bands again, I soon realised the pain of playing live was too much. I had a stage of depression around this, however I did not want to give up so i became a recording musician and I've enjoyed every minute so far.

2. What inspired Teddy Head to start playing and making music?

I've always loved music since being a kid. My Mum & Dad would drag us to church every Sunday. I was around 13 years old when I asked the church drummer if i could play his drums. I got shot down a few times but one evening he said that when everyone was gone he would show me a beat. To his shock and my own, I picked them up really fast. My Mum & dad bought me a practice pad to use but it wasn't the same as the real thing. Every chance I got to play them I did: at school & even church was fun now.

One night, aged around 14, I decided to sneak down and watch tv. This is when i discoverd Nirvana. From that moment, I know that was what I loved. At age 15, I auditioned for my first band; a local school band was advertising for a singer. Being a little shy, I never played the drums around others, only after school when others had left. The only other drummer in my school year had already taken that spot so I decided why not apply to sing. After the audition I did get the gig, maybe it was because no one else turned up but still a win.

I ended up being the nerdy kid in a band. After a few band practises, everyone was getting rather annoyed with the bass player who decided never to turn up but always left his bass at school. The guitar player, Karl, asked me to give it a go and said he would show me some bits. Going through my Blink 182 stage, I though this would be awesome. I picked it up really fast and was gigging in a few weeks. I had an obsession with learning instruments after this: keyboard, trumpet, trombone, alto sax - I had to learn them all. Then of course, guitar. It wouldn't be Teddy Head without guitars.

3. Who are Teddy Head's biggest musical influences?

The Beatles are big for me & Nofx for sure. I always loved the clever lyrics put together by Fat Mike. Red Hot Chilli Peppers when I discovered slap bass. This is also a big influence on my bass playing. Slipknot and Metallica with their big powerful guitars. My style varies a lot - anything from swing to metal. Even when creating a heavily guitar influenced song, I think it's important to make a catchy melody as this is what most people will be guided to.

4. What are your goals in the music industry or as an artist?

I just want to have fun, be myself and make music I enjoy and hopefully others do too. I enjoy listening to others in the community and I've even learned a lot from them. If you can't enjoy music, there's no point, especially when there was a chance I might not have played again.

5. Tell us about your creative process.

This can be different each time but even if the song idea comes on guitar, I will always sit down with the bass guitar while writing a structure. Normally I try to find the hook of the song and build from that. When it's recording time, I'll remember the song parts in my head and get on the drums. This always helps me with where I'll place each part. I always try to think of it as if I'm different people when I'm playing to try make it sound more like a band than one man. Each guitar is played differently for starters. The main thing for me is the hard hitting and aggressive drum style. I then try to think if the listener will be bored or not so I will shorten parts, such as the 15 min guitar solo.

6. What is your all-time favorite song by another artist and why?

I don't really have just one, but one of my biggest favourites is Alter Bridge - Black Bird. This song has everything from heart warming vocals, melodic and heavy guitars and even two guitar solos that are full of emotion.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

Best advice I was given was to play for enjoyment, not to impress others. If you can't enjoy the music you're playing yourself, you can't expect others to enjoy it. Don't try to be better than someone else or be jealous of their abilty. Learn at your own pace and be as good as you can and you will shine.

8. What is your proudest accomplishment?

This is easy: My family. Even more proud of my kids' love of music and the bands we share love for. I have a 13-year-old who has a great taste in music and a 2-year-old who will dance and sing his little heart out. He's already a little metal head.

9. What's been your most embarrassing moment so far?

There's been many. But recently, after a long day I was left tidying the toys up from the floor while my wife took our youngest to bed. I sat down on the floor to pick up the toys. I heard a knock and thinking this was my wife, I muttered away to myself, "I just sat down, are you kidding?" I hear the knock again, so I shouted, "What do you want? I've just sat down!" I hear a voice through my front room window, "Hi, I have a delivery for you!" It wasn't even my wife, it was Amazon at the door. I said sorry and felt a bit of a dope. My wife however thought it was hilarious. It is now but at the time it was very embarrassing.

10. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

Easy again, I've more or less answered this above. Being told that there was a chance I wouldn't play music again was definitely the low point. I feel like I'm riding my high point right now, making music I enjoy and sharing it with others, just like the NAS community.

It was good to find out more about you Daniel. It must have been awful to think that you may never be able to play again, and it must have taken a lot of hard work and determination to get to where you are now after that accident. It's great that you get som much of a buzz out of creating and playing.
